Porter John Brown

Porter John Brown who was named after his Grandfathers, Porter Cogar and John Brown. Porter was born October 8, 1925 in Rivesville, Marion County, West Virginia to WV State Police Trooper, Artie G. Brown and Bessie Cogar Brown. He was raised in Flatwoods, Braxton, WV. During World War II, he was only seventeen and joined the Army Air Force, where he served for two years, nine months and twenty-three days. He served in the Tactical 9th Air Force in North Africa and Europe as a gunner cameraman in B17's. Helped train Chinese crews as instructor gunner in B24's and as instructor gunner for US crews in B29's. He was discharged at the end of the war when he was 20. He attended WV University and graduated in 1949 with a BS degree in Geology. He worked thirty-five years for the Columbia Gas System as a Geologist. Thirteen of those years as Chief Geologist for United Fuel Gas Company and the last Thirteen years as Chief of Geological Affairs for Columbia Gas Transmission Corporation. He was a certified Professional Geologist and a registered Professional Petroleum Engineer. He was a member of and served in various capacities in several professional organizations including; Appalachian Geological Society, President and secretary treasury. Potential Gas committee; Advisor and chairman of Eastern Area. (East of Mississippi River). Interstate Oil Compact Commission; Advisor and member of geothermal committee. Charter member of Unconventional Natural Gas Advisors' Group of the Gas Research Institute. Virginia Oil and Gas Association; Vice President and Board of Directors. Member of American Association of Petroleum Geologists, President of WV Section. Member of Kentucky and Pennsylvania Oil and Gas Associations. He was preceded in death by his loving, lovable wife of fifty years, Ruth Glendall Guthrie Brown and his sister Lucille Mills. He is survived by his three sons, Porter John Brown Jr and wife Beverly Brown of St Cloud, Florida, Dr. Joseph Scott Brown and wife Lela Brown of Knoxville, Tennessee, Delmer Richard Brown and wife Frances Brown of Port Lavaca, Texas. Two sisters, Betty Jo Estes of Richmond Hill, Ga and Anna Mae Gainer of Laurel, DE, ten grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. He will be buried beside his wife, Glendall in Morrison cemetery, Braxton County, WV.
