Karen D. Stein

Karen Dougherty Stein, aged 66, passed away peacefully at her home in Saint Cloud, FL on Sunday, October 25, 2020 of natural causes with her husband and dog at her side.. Karen was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1954 and grew up in the MD-DC-VA metropolitan area. In 1992 she married Robert "Bob" W. Stein, III at the Mount Vernon Estate in Alexandria, VA. Karen obtained her Associates Degree in Respiratory Therapy from Prince George's Community College in Largo, MD and was credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). She worked as a RRT at the Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly, MD. "PG" as it is known, is the second busiest trauma center in the state of Maryland. She also worked as a Respiratory Therapy Supervisor at INOVA Mount Vernon Hospital in Alexandria, VA and as a Respiratory Therapist at St. Cloud Medical Center in Saint Cloud, FL. Karen was an avid reader. She enjoyed reading books about the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, and detective murder mysteries. She and her husband were active geocachers, working together they were known as "TEAM US2". Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity where participants use GPS devices to hide and/or seek containers. Karen liked to put small toys or other "treasures" called "SWAG" in the geocaches they hid or found to bring a smile to the geocachers who found the cache next. Karen was a member at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Kissimmee, FL. Karen is predeceased in death by her parents William C. Dougherty and Dolores (Koury) Dougherty. Surviving family members include her husband Robert "Bob" W. Stein, III, her son Michael L. Simonson, and three grandchildren, Ember Ann Flint, Remy "Jude" Kay Simonson, and Samara "Sam" Riley Flint. Also surviving are three siblings Deborah Ann Hannon, George "Duffy" Dougherty and Anna Marie Lloyd and three sisters-in-law Barbara Ann Goldberg, Madge Henderson, and Linda (Randall) Waycaster. Also surviving is her husband's service animal, Madison, a Pointer / Great Pyernees mix dog. As per Karen's wishes, there will be no public viewing or funeral services. Her ashes will be interred at Mount Peace Cemetery in Saint Cloud, FL. Her husband would like to thank the staff of Cornerstone Hospice for the enormous amount of care and support they provided.
