Leon June Slater Jr

Leon June Slater Jr. was born on November 26th, 1949, to parents Florence Olivia Smith-Slater and Leon June Slater Sr. He passed away on Wednesday, March 27th, 2024. Born in Elizabeth, NJ, Rahway held a special place in his heart, his beloved hometown. He attended Rahway High School, where he excelled and left a lasting impact on his classmates and teachers. Leon was a standout football star and cherished his lifelong friendships forged during those formative years. Although destined for Rutgers University, Leon's path took a patriotic turn when he was drafted by the United States Army in 1969 and enlisted in the Army Reserve in 1982. He served with distinction, earning the respect and admiration of all who served alongside him. He was honorably discharged from both and served with honor and pride. Leon comes from a long line of service men in the Smith family, representing all 4 branches. He was highly regarded by all whom he served alongside. After his military service, Leon continued his commitment to education and self-improvement. He pursued his passion for learning at Virginia State University and Bloomfield College, where he studied psychology. Additionally, he honed his supervisory and management skills at the John Adams Institute and Monmouth County College, earning certificates that reflected his dedication to excellence. Leon's professional journey led him to the enchanting world of Disney, where he dedicated over 12 years to ensuring the safety and security of guests and celebrities alike. From Mariah Carey to Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Leon approached his role with unwavering diligence and integrity. His tenure at Universal Studios Orlando further solidified his reputation as a leader and mentor, earning him countless friendships that transcended the workplace. His friends and colleagues turned into family. Affectionately known by his family and hometown friends as "Hilky," which was not a favorite of his, and "Gator Slater" to his Florida family—Leon's impact extended far beyond titles and accolades. He was a devoted son, brother, uncle, cousin, poppa, cherished friend and more. He is survived by his baby sister Sheila Slater of Rahway, NJ and his niece Tanisha Leone Slater of Avenel, NJ. Leon's spirit lives on in the hearts of his family, including his best friend and earth angel, Esther Maldonado, step-daughters Stacy Ann Maldonado and Michelle Lee Maldonado, grandchildren Ariel Perez, Gigi Perez, Nelson Acevedo, Syerra Carmona, great-grandchildren Adriel Perlon, Messiah Martinez, as well as a host of cousins, dear friends, and colleagues.
