George Charles Hopkins

Mr. George Charles Hopkins, 81, of St Cloud Florida passed away on Thursday, January 5th, 2017. He was the beloved husband of Carol (Main) Hopkins. Predeceased by his wife, the late Barbara A Hopkins, from Buffalo, NY. George was born in Buffalo, NY and served in the US Marine Corp at the end of the Korean War. After being honorably discharged from the Marine Corps, George went on to earn his PhD at the University of Buffalo in Organic Polymer Chemistry. George then worked 20 years as a research scientist at a Fortune 500 chemical company until 1977 when he left industry and opened his own small business as the owner of 2 Kwik Kopy printing stores in the Buffalo area. George retired in 1990 at the age of 55 and moved with Barbara to St Cloud Florida to be with their daughter and grandchildren and to leave the Buffalo winters behind. George loved to play basketball and did so competitively into his late 40's. After moving to Florida, George loved to play the game of shuffleboard and joined the St. Cloud Shuffleboard Club in the 1990's. As a member there George served several different leadership roles including club vice president, treasurer and board member. As a player, George won multiple club and regional championships. George and Carol were snowbirds for the last 4 years, and traveled back to the Buffalo area for the summer. At their summer home in Leisurewood Campgrounds, George and Carol were the three year reigning shuffle board champions, a feat never before achieved. Their names will be forever engraved on the champions trophy there. George was also an avid bridge player and would often be found playing bridge on Mondays and Fridays at the Shuffleboard Club. Over the last few years George and Carol also enjoyed Cruising and cruised to places such as the Panama Canal, England, Scotland, and Ireland, as well as, the traditional Caribbean islands. He was a faithful member of the Episcopal Church of St. Luke and St. Peter and really enjoyed attending Sunday services and serving as an usher there. George was the devoted and loving father to Ronald Hopkins (wife, Beth), Suzanne Regan (husband, Mark) and Glenn Hopkins (wife, Karen). He was a loving grandfather to Dawn Regan, Amanda Regan, Joe Hopkins, Nick Hopkins, the late Jessica Hopkins, Ashlin Adams and Averie Adams. And is survived by two great grandchildren, Noah Hopkins and Lilly Gentz. Celebration of George's life will be held at 4:00 pm on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at the Episcopal Church of St Luke and St Peter at 2745 Canoe Creek Road St Cloud. A reception will follow the service immediately following with finger foods, dessert and coffee being served.
