Edith Elizabeth Barrett

"Edith Elizabeth Barrett was born on 22nd June, 1929 to Johanna and Marcus Barrett in the parish of Portland, Jamaica W.I. Edith had 4 sisters and 3 brothers and was the 5th child in the family. She attended the St. Andrew High School for Girls as a boarder for 4 years. After leaving school, she worked at the Department of Statistics in Kingston for almost 5 years. In 1957, Edith migrated to England to start her training as a nurse. She enrolled at Queen Mary’s Hospital London where she completed her training. She then returned to Jamaica in 1964 and worked at the Nuttall Memorial Hospital. Edith eventually moved to the United States. In New York City, she worked as a Registered Nurse at Roosevelt Hospital for over 29 years until her retirement in 1995. She lived with her sister, Christene and Christene’s daughter, Nicole. In 2006, Edith moved with her sister, Christene, from their place of residence of more than 30 years in Flushing, New York, to Orlando, FL. to be closer to Nicole and her family. At the end of 2022, Edith moved into a new home with her niece, Nicole and her family. One of Edith’s favorite hobbies was traveling. In 1978, she visited Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philippines with her sister, Marion. In addition to travel by air, Edith owned a green Oldsmobile, which she named Betty. Edith enjoyed taking road trips with Betty, especially to visit state parks. Baking was another hobby that Edith enjoyed. She was famous for her cheesecake and Easter bun recipes. Edith Barrett lived a fulfilling life. When she reminisced about the past, she would always say “back when I was young & famous…”. She is survived by her 2 sisters: Marion Barrett and Joyce Trader, her niece, Nicole Milligan, Nicole’s husband, Warren, grand-nephew, Nolan, grand-nieces, Nyah and Neena, Christal and Heather, and other nieces, Adrienne, Yvonne, Arlene, Charmaine, Johanna, Carol and Vivienne and nephews, Richard, Carl, Vernon, Rick and Marcus, as well as additional family and friends within the U.S, Jamaica and Barbados.” “A memorial service for family and close friends will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at the home of Edith’s niece, Nicole Milligan.
